The Memphis, Tennessee Mitsubishi Electric Transformer Factory

Gossett Mazda Hyundai Mitsubishi is proud to call Memphis, TN home! Among all the wonderful culture, sights, food and nature to enjoy in Memphis is an interesting link to our dealership: Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. maintains a transformer factory right here in Memphis. Read here for an overview of the plant and learn about some of the great things Mitsubishi does outside the automotive industry!

Officially opening its doors on April 19, 2013, the Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc., transformer factory in Memphis, Tennessee, has been in operation for only a few years. Replacing the former headquarters of the division, the Memphis factory’s extra square footage allows for more production of larger power transformers.

MEPPI set out to create the most advanced transformer production factory in the country. Right after its opening in 2013, the company had already made deals with two utility companies to place four 500-kilovolt transformers in the Mojave Desert to connect the California power grid to solar power collectors.

The factory cost $200 million to build and comprises 350,000 square feet, with more than 250 employees working in the building. The project was conceived in 2011, and a year later production began, taking only a year to finish. It is located on a 100-acre plot of land in Rivergate Industrial Park in southwest Tennessee on the waterfront.

Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc. teamed up with Southwest Tennessee Community College and Northwest Mississippi Community College to provide pre-employment training to students, as well as training education for current employees.

Mitsubishi considers the Memphis factory a vital part of the company’s goal to provide clean energy to meet the growing demand for transmission and distribution equipment. It also aims to stabilize the national power grid using its extra-high-voltage shell-type transformers, which make up over 30% global electric utility equipment. Some of the applications of these shell-type transformers include generator step-up transformers, step-down power transformers, autotransformers, and shunt reactors.
