When you want the best of what the south has to offer, you visit Tennessee. And, one of the best small towns in the state is Bartlett. This little city is located just east of Memphis and has a rich history and family-friendly atmosphere. Here at Gossett Mazda Hyundai Mitsubishi, we always love serving our friends and neighbors from the great city of Bartlett.
Back in the day...
In its early days, Bartlett was actually known as Union Depot or Green Bottom. It was a popular stop for people heading west along stagecoach routes and was also a depot for the Memphis & Ohio Railroad. In 1866, the area became officially incorporated with fewer than 100 residents. The town’s name was changed to Bartlett after Major Gabriel M. Bartlett, a local farmer. Today, the Bartlett Station Plaza stands where his home used to be.
Since the 1970s, Bartlett has seen a rapid and steady growth in population. Today, it is estimated to be the ninth largest city in the state and is one of the best places to live.
History buffs will love visiting Bartlett. The Bartlett Historical Society runs the Bartlett Museum, which is housed in the Nicholas Gotten House located on Court Street. The museum is free to the public and open every first and third Sunday of the month. Another great historical location is the Davies Manor Plantation. Here, visitors can explore historical farm buildings and take scenic walks along the numerous nature trails.
This day and age...
For local residents, Bartlett has a thriving park district that includes the Bartlett Recreation Center. This center comes with a swimming pool, indoor running track, fitness rooms, basketball courts, and much more.
