Hyundai was first created in 1947 as a manufacturing company, which it remained until 1967 when the Hyundai Motor Company was formed. Working with Ford, the Cortina was the brand’s first vehicle, offering a practical solution to gas-guzzling American designs. Later working with a range of British automakers, the well-known Hyundai Pony was made in 1975, and, as the world’s first Korean car, this model made history.
Hyundai in the United States
It wasn’t until 1986 that Hyundai officially hit the US market. The Hyundai Excel, a classic sedan, was named one of the Best Products in the World by Fortune magazine. Thanks to its success with the affordable Excel, the company later built the Sonata in 1988 and the four-cylinder Alpha in 1991. By the late 1990s, the brand became a force to be reckoned with, owning branches and divisions in Canada, the US, India, Brazil, Japan, and China.
In the early 2000s, Hyundai saw radical changes. A complete overhaul left the brand with refreshed looks and an emphasis on state-of-the-art design. Acquiring KIA in 1998, the company expanded to increase quality and provide Americans with a name they can trust. Consistently named one of the best in initial quality by JD Power and Associates, Hyundai has now been rated one of the top 100 businesses in the world.
What does Hyundai look like today? After 25 successful years in the US market, Hyundai still strives to provide quality vehicles at affordable prices. Popular models include the Santa Fe, Santa Fe Sport, Tucson, Elantra, Sonata, Veloster, Azera, Genesis, Equus, and Accent. The brand is researching groundbreaking eco-friendly technologies and vehicle designs for the future, and pioneering driver assist technologies have made driving safer than ever before. Hyundai’s slogan—“New Thinking. New Possibilities”—reflects the brand’s commitment to innovation and quality.
